What really moves the price

The bot measures the price reaction to every story. Here those measurements are put together: after which sources and which types of news the price moves more, and which are just noise. The data accumulates from day one and is recalculated every morning.

How to read the numbers

This section answers one question – does news affect crypto prices: which news coincides with price moves, and which passes without a trace. The numbers above are counted from all the bot's measurements since October 29, 2026 – for every story that has a publication time and a price before and after.

The reaction is counted over 4 hours after the story and without the market: bitcoin's move is taken out of the coin's move. We count it in absolute terms: both a rise and a fall are a reaction. A notable reaction starts at 1 percentage point.

Reaction over 4 hours

How far the coin’s price moved in the 4 hours after the story was published. The whole market’s move (bitcoin’s) is subtracted from the coin’s move, so you see what the coin itself did.

pp – percentage points

A difference in percent. For example, the coin rose 3% and the market 1% – a reaction of +2 pp. We count the absolute value: both a rise and a fall are a reaction.

Clear reaction

A move of more than 1 pp in 4 hours. The share of such stories shows how often a source publishes something after which the price actually moves.

Which sources move the price

In the tables above, crypto news sources and event types are sorted by average reaction. A source gets into the table only when it has at least 3 stories with a measurement. The event type – regulation, listing, hack, network upgrade, funds and others – is set by the bot.

Official project news and the media are compared separately. This is one of the main questions I built the bot for: is it true that an official announcement moves the price more than a retelling on social media? The answer grows every day.

Sources with at least 3 measured stories. At the top are those after whose stories the price moves most often.

Which stories move the price

Which news moves the price more: the event type is set by the bot – regulation, listing, hack, network upgrade, funds. The more stories of one type, the more reliable the average.

Official news or media

Official project news or retellings in the media – after which does the price move more? Average reaction and the share of notable reactions by source level.

Archive of spikes and drops

The archive holds all spikes and drops for the whole period: hours when a coin's own move went past the threshold (more than 1.5% or more than 2.5 usual swings for the week). Each one is linked to the news published three hours before it and three hours after. Moves together with the market are marked separately – when a coin crossed the threshold, but together with bitcoin.

How to use the data

The data is most useful for your own coins. Open the source table and see which of them most often write things after which the price really moves. Then open the spike archive: which news stood before sharp moves of your coin. In a few weeks it will be clear which sources deserve attention first and which can be scrolled past.

This is not a trade call and not a strategy. It is a way to separate noise from events based on facts, not on feelings.

How to read these numbers honestly

  • The database is young. A few days means dozens of stories, not thousands. One loud story can shift the average for a source.
  • A match is not a cause. If the price moved after a story, it only means the move came after the story.
  • The market could know in advance. The news could have been priced in before it was published.

How every number is counted is in the methodology. What is already tracked and what will be added next is in the article Crypto statistics: the first launch.

Frequently asked questions

What news moves crypto prices?

The bot's data shows this by source and event type in the tables above. While the database is young, the numbers are preliminary.

What is a notable reaction?

A coin's own move of more than 1 percentage point in 4 hours after the story, without bitcoin's move.

What is a crypto spike?

An hour when a coin's own move went past the threshold: more than 1.5% or more than 2.5 usual swings for the week.

Since when is the data collected?

Since October 29, 2026. New measurements are added every morning.

Does the data prove that a story moved the price?

No. The number shows what happened after the publication, not why.
